INDIAN RIVER KQNTROL SOCIETY
PROCEDURES For CLUB SOARING CONTESTS / EVENTS Revised; 25 February 2009
The term CD means the person responsible for the Contest or Event being held at
the 524 Flying Site.
Procedures:
IRKS sailplane events are normally run following the procedures published below.
Tasks are set by the CD responsible for the day's flying and should be guided
by the AMA rulebook on RC Soaring. Landing criteria and scoring are at the option
of the CD and usually involve a circle or a rectangular area. All event specifications
particular to the event itself should be advertised sufficiently in advance in
the AIRSCOOP newsletter and may be amended at the time of the event only with
agreement of all registrants at the pilots' meeting.
Tasks:
IRKS soaring event tasks are traditionally a modified thermal duration with landing
bonus. The tasks are loosely taken from the AMA Competition Regulations 2007-2008,
Radio Control Soaring, Section 13. Tasks and landing area configurations are confirmed
at the pilots' meeting. Task times are habitually set from 3 to 10 minutes and
will generally follow the AMA Precision Duration format, but, may be altered by
the CD to fit weather, field conditions, and to create interest in a particular
aspect of soaring.
Scoring:
• Scores are a summation of flight points and landing bonus points. Overall
scores are determined
by adding flight and landing points with highest score being winner for the class.
Normalization
of scores may be used at the option of the CD.
• Flight timing is done by an individual other than the pilot. Flight time
for each round is total
flight seconds measured from the instant of release of the plane from the launch
line until the
instant of first contact with any ground-based object (including any person).
The plane may
continue to fly without penalty for landing bonus after first contact, but flight
timing will have
stopped at the instant of contact.
• Round tasks will be announced at the pilots' meeting and confirmed at
the beginning of each
round in case of changes in weather or field conditions during the contest.
• Flight score is awarded as one point per second of flight time up to the
announced task time for
each round. Each second over the task time will result in a one point deduction
for the round
score up to sixty additional seconds after which the flight score will be zero.
Some other special
scoring method, such as Triathlon, may be substituted, but must be announced in
advance and at
pilots' meeting
• Landing bonuses are given for position of nose of fuselage centerline
after plane comes to rest.
Landing bonus points will be earned by landing within an announced circle or longitudinal
area
or nearest to a line or point on the ground as announced at pilots' meeting. For
landing points,
plane must remain upright at rest and not lose any parts other than rubber bands
from wing hold*
downs and must be capable of immediate safe re-flight in case of questionable
damage during
landing
• Landing beyond field boundaries announced at pilots' meeting will result
in a zero flight and
landing score for the round.
Overall order of finish in total contest points will count toward IRKS member
"Pilot of The Year" award at end of club year. CD is responsible for
scoring results at contest and submission of scoring to IRKS Club
Contest Coordinator.
